Top UK bookbinder Mark Cockram to hold workshop and lecture on creative bookbinding


On his 3rd visit to the Philippines, top British artist-bookbinder will hold a 2-day arts and crafts workshop on creative bookbinding for artists and bookbinders with no or limited experience on March 13 to 14 and a 2-hour public lecture about two of his unique artist's books on March 15, 2018.

Mark Cockram is the proprietor of Studio 5 based in UK and often travels to France, Japan, India and the Philippines to teach. He was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders (UK) in 2001 and since then he has been a regular Man Booker Award shortlist binder. Last year he was honored to bind the Man Booker Prize winning novel Lincoln in the Bardot by George Saunders. Cockram is the first to be accredited Society of Bookbinders teacher.

The workshop and lecture will be held at the Ortigas Foundation Library on the Second Floor of Ortigas Building, Ortigas corner Meralco Avenues, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.   Mark will be assisted by a team of bookbinding-conservation specialists from the Ortigas Foundation Library.  When he teaches, he combines techniques from his training in fine art, design, and bookbinding to create stunning, distinctly non-traditional books. It is never boring but lively, humorous and playful.  Mark’s passion for his work is electric. He sparks with ideas. As told to Mark Beech, editor of DANTE, ‘when he was at school, he found books extraordinarily difficult to read. He was in and out of remedial classes because his written and reading English was so poor’. Now he is into creating and teaching art on, of, and with books. ‘It is strange how life turns around sometimes’. The 2–day workshop will be held on March 13 and 14 from 9 am to 5 pm while the lecture will be held in the evening the following day from 6 to 8 pm. The workshop is intended to enable the participant to develop an awareness of creative variations in the making of a Multi Sectional Flat Case Bindings. The opportunity to experiment with mixed media and a variety of traditional and non- traditional mediums in the decoration of book cloth and apply the relevant techniques involved in the production of a series of a Multi Sectional Flat Back Case Binding. Pre-binding topics include the making and using your own Gabarit de Grecquage (a kind of sewing template) and Flat Pack sewing cradle. Main topic is to either explore upon good working practices when making a ‘Flat Back Case Bound Book’. These include understanding the relationship between material and construction manipulation, tips on correct procedures, measuring hacks and the ‘Devil in the Detail’. Alternative forwarding, lettering, book-cloth decoration, simple stencil making, foil use and silk screening techniques for contemporary book arts will also be covered.

The lecture will highlight the recent design bindings and artist’s books “Lincoln in the Bardot” by George Saunders, a 2017 Man Booker winning novel and “Clay Travels” which was bound using clay and traditional materials The topics covered will include the steps in making, designing, and material manipulation of the two unique books.

For 2018, the Ortigas Foundation Library plans to conduct another workshop on treatment and preservation of old book and manuscripts.
